Description
Students will be given selected readings in the theories and issues of nursing and service learning and will explore the connection between professional nursing practice and service learning. The course will explore the issues of social justice, oppression, liberation, and how the issues influence health care delivery and the profession of nursing. The course includes community activities in a health care setting that has consistent exposure to the practice of a Registered Nurse.

Description
Students explore the interaction of multiple co-morbidities in the aging adult population. Concepts of culture, genomics, psychology, ethnicity, sexuality, nutrition, polypharmacy, and community resources are discussed analyzed with students developing application strategies.

Students learn and apply computer skills to health and human service delivery. Emphasizes hands-on experience using computers for electronic communication and presentations, and to improve skills in the use of database management, spreadsheet, and presentation software. Students participate in online research, information resources evaluation, correct citation of Internet resources, and weekly online discussions. Introduces state-of-the-art health and human service software.

Description
Students are introduced to public and nonprofit healthcare systems; approaches to analyzing these systems, and their ability to achieve their missions. Students discuss management strategies used when working within these systems to effect positive change and improve service delivery. Students will be expected to participate in a variety of activities that will supplement reading assignments and lectures including attending a meeting of the governing board of a public or nonprofit organization.

NURS 360NURS 360: Nurs Sociopolitical Envmt

Description
The course emphasizes models and methods for delivering health care in a post health care reform environment and includes an exploration of the multiple relationships between interdisciplinary healthcare team members, the central role of the nurse in care coordination, the presence of an authoritarian hierarchy, and gender effects in nursing. Using data-based studies and policy analysis the important but invisible sociopolitical environment in which the work of nursing is performed is discussed.

Description
This course is to facilitate your understanding of the history, politics, and process of health and social policy making in the US and to develop policy analysis and writing skills. We will explore various social, political, and multiple cultural factors that affect policy making and discuss how and why the process of policy analysis and decision making has constructed health and social systems in the United States. There is a semester-long, team-based policy analysis project.

Description
Use selected readings in genomic literature and its application in the aging adult population. Survey nursing theories that support the inclusion of genetics in human health and illness, providing a theoretical base for a discussion of the implications for pathophysiological changes in an aging population and the role of nursing in providing care. Use information technology to collect, organize and communicate patterns that support role of nursing in providing evidence based care.

Description
NURS 499S is a field experience in the community synthesizing service learning and community health nursing concepts necessary for registered nurses to manage and/or deliver care to individuals, families, and populations across the lifespan. The student integrates and unifies a community nursing skill set with concepts that inform the practice of nursing in multicultural populations focusing on health promotion and disease prevention.
