To be prepared for the Computer Science and Information Technology B.S. degree program, we recommend you take the following courses prior to starting your upper division major coursework. You also should speak with your advisor about your prior coursework and academic goals in order to develop an academic plan.
High School Recommended Preparation
- Pre-Calculus
- One year of study of a foreign language in high school is recommended
Community College Recommended Preparation
Community college students are encouraged to achieve transfer-ready status (as defined below) and complete the equivalent of the following courses before transferring to CSUMB. Students who wish to complete their B.S. in CSIT within 60 units of transferring to CSUMB need to have completed CSU General Education requirements as well as the following major pre-requisite classes:
- MATH 150MATH 150: Calculus I
- MATH 151MATH 151: Calculus II
- CST 231CST 231: Problm-Solving/Programng
- CST 238CST 238: Intro to Data Structures
Transfer ready is defined as:
- 60 or more semester credits (90 quarter units) of transferable courses.
- Minimum GPA of a 2.00 for California residents and a 2.40 for nonresidents.
- Completed at least 30 semester credits (45 quarter units) of general education courses with a grade of C or better.
- Within the 30 general education credits, complete with a C or better the four-course sequence most commonly approved as English composition, speech, critical thinking, and a mathematics course with intermediate algebra as a prerequisite. (Golden Four)
- "Good standing" at their current or last college/university.

CSUMB Lower-Division Recommended Preparation
CSIT Upper Division Recommended Pathways assume prior completion of the CSIT Lower Division Pathway (see pathways)
If you enter CSUMB as a freshman and are considering the Computer Science & Information Technology major, we recommend that you begin taking MATH and CST courses during your first year. Please consult the Requirements and Course Pathways information on this website, or speak with the CSIT Advisor (see Advising information) for required lower-division coursework and recommended course sequencing.
You may declare Computer Science and Information Technology as your major at any time in your college career. Be sure to contact the CSIT Advisor in Media Learning Center, Room 150, or email csit@csumb.edu as soon as you declare this major.
