Prerequisites
SPAN 202: Intermediate Spanish II or equivalent upper-division status, and approval of the School of World Languages and Cultures.
Outcomes, Courses, and Assessment
You must achieve both of the Learning Outcomes designated below by successfully completing courses or alternative assessment options as described in the section that follows.
LO 1 Language Proficiency ~ students demonstrate an intermediate-high proficiency level in the four major skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) according to American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) guidelines
- Complete at least one of the following:
SPAN 301: Comp/Oral Practice
SPAN 302: Hist/Phonetic Struct Span Lang
SPAN 303: Adv Spanish Grammar
SPAN 305: Spanish for The Professions
LO 2 Cultural Knowledge ~ students provide a comparative description and basic analysis of the peoples, history, and culture of the Spanish-speaking world (including the Hispanic Southwest) ~ engage in the learning of cultural customs (e.g. quinceañera, compadrazgo, Día de los muertos, Carnaval), practices (e.g. religious, ofrendas, fiestas, curanderismo, Cuaresma), products (e.g. literature, art, music), and perspectives (e.g. cosmovisión, worldviews, cultural values, national & cultural identity, etc.), and other skills necessary for crosscultural communication.

- You must complete SPAN 306: Cultur/Civ Span Ltn Amer Introduction to the Cultures and Civilizations of Hispanic Latin America
- You must complete at least one of the following: SPAN 304: Intro To Hispanic Literat; SPAN 307: History&Politics Of Mex; SPAN 308: Hist/Cultr Aztlan:SW US; SPAN 309: Hist & Polit Of Latn Amer; SPAN 310: Hispanic Child Lit; SPAN 321: Masterpieces of Hispanic Lit; SPAN 365: The Chicano Novel; SPAN 370: The Chicano Community; SPAN 395: Special Topics; SPAN 425: La Literatura Mexicana; SPAN 426: Narativa Hispanoamericana; SPAN 427: Latin Amer Women Writers; SPAN 428: La Literatura Afrolatina
- In addition to the these learning experiences, you must complete one additional course to meet the 16-credit requirement. This learning experience can be either a language or culture course from the those listed above, or you may take one related course from another CSUMB academic program (see below). All coursework taken for this minor must be upper-division.
