Students will complete Core courses, Major Learning Outcomes and courses specific to their chosen concentration in order to succesfully complete their degree in Music.

Major Learning Outcomes

MLO 1 Historical and Theoretical Analysis

Students identify genres from different periods and integrate historical and theoretical perspectives in analyzing contemporary styles.

MLO 2 Community Issues Analysis

Students understand and analyze societal issues associated with the production, dissemination and consumption of music.

MLO 3 Comparative Analysis

Students understand compositional processes, aesthetic properties of style, and the ways these shape and are shaped by artistic and cultural forces.

  • Complete two of the following
  • MPA 334: Survey of Electronic Music (2 units)
  • MPA 341: Sight Reading for Singers (2 units)
  • MPA 370: Composition/Arranging I (2 units)
  • MPA 371: Composition & Arranging II (2 units)
  • MPA 400: University Concert Choir (2 units)
  • MPA 334, 370, and 371 can not be taken to fulfill an MLO if it is part of your concentration. Please see concentration requirements below to see if applicable to your course of study

MLO 4 Moral and Ethical Analysis

 Students understand and address moral and ethical issues.

Required Courses

  • HCOM 403: Ethical Issues (4 units)
  • CHHS 350: Personal/Professional Ethics (4 units)

MLO 5 Performance Skills

Students express themselves artistically in at least one major performance area at a level appropriate for the particular music emphasis.

Required Courses

  • Complete one of the following Performance Study courses for at least two consecutive semesters
  • MPA 315: Performance Study Intermediate (1 units)
  • MPA 415: Performance Study Advanced (1 units)
  • MPA 410: Instrumental Music (1 units)
  • Complete at least two courses from the following

  • MPA 332: Voice Training II (2 units)
  • MPA 340: Music Prod & Artistic Dev (2 units)
  • MPA 345: Improvisation (2 units)
  • MPA 350: Advanced Performing Band (1 units)
  • MPA 405: Ensembles I (1 units)
  • MPA 406: Ensembles II (1 units)
  • MPA 420: Advanced Voice Ensemble (1 to 2 units)

Students understand how technology serves music and use the technological tools applicable to a specific area of concentration.
