Course-Based Assessment
In each course satisfying the Language ULR, faculty assess the following evidence to determine if you have satisfied the outcomes for the ULR.
- Class conversations
- Portfolios
- Oral presentations
- Papers
- Oral interviews
- Projects
- Audiotapes / videotapes
- Exams
- Reading responses
- Journals
- COCI (Classroom Oral Competency Interview)
- CWCA (Classroom Writing Competency Assessment)
Alternative Independent Assessment
You can also meet the requirements for this ULR through assessment of prior learning. Independent assessment assumes that you have already attained mastery of the outcomes. It is not an independent study or placement. You may email the Language ULR chair for more information.
You must enroll in the necessary assessment courses. If you are a freshman or sophomore, you need to enroll simultaneously in the 101, 102, 201, and 202 assessment sections of the language of choice. Individual assessment is conducted by trained assessors.
Independent assessment is currently available in Arabic, Cantonese, Chinese, French, Farsi, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai, Turkish and Vietnamese.
Option for Students with Learning Disabilities
For students with learning disabilities (officially documented by Student Disability Resources (SDR); Building 47, First Floor, East), alternative pathways to the language ULR are available. Depending on your status upon entry to CSUMB (freshman/sophomore or junior/senior transfer students), you may petition the Language ULR Committee for approval. For further information, please contact SDR.
