Components

There are two components to CSUMB's service learning requirement.

Lower-Division Service Learning Requirement

This requirement is fulfilled through the Community Participation University Learning Requirement, which you must complete if you enter CSUMB as a freshman or as a transfer student who is not certified in Area D: Social, Political, and Economic Institutions. You are exempt from fulfilling the Community Participation ULR if you enter CSUMB with Area D certification or if you entered CSUMB before fall 1999 with more than 56 transferable units.

To fulfill the CP ULR, you must earn a C or better in an approved course, such as any section of SL 200S: Intro to Service Introduction to Service in Multicultural Communities.

Major-Based Service Learning Requirement

All CSUMB students must fulfill this requirement by completing a service learning course that meets the requirements of their selected major. You should consult with your major advisor to determine the appropriate course to take.

Courses

CSUMB offers over 50 service learning courses each semester. They can be identified by an "S" following the course number (e.g. LS 393S). The courses include ongoing offerings such as:

  • SL 200S: Intro to Service Introduction to Service in Multicultural Communities
  • CST 361S: Technology Tutors Technology Tutors
Service Time

Introduction to Service in Multicultural Communities requires that you serve with the community for a minimum of 30 hours. Other service learning experiences may require more or less time depending on the learning objectives of the course and the activities that have been agreed upon by the faculty and community partner. You will want to check with the faculty member teaching a service learning course to verify the minimum time required so you can arrange your schedule accordingly.
