Business Administration B.S. ~ Program Requirements

Major Curriculum Structure

In addition to General Ed Requirements and University Learning Requirements, the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration requires 27 units of lower division core courses, 34 units of upper division core courses and 16 units of upper division business elective courses, for a total of 77 major units. Some of the required major units also meet General Education Requirements or University Learning Requirements.

Lower Division Core - 27 Units
  • MATH 115(This requirement may also be satisfied by Precalculus, Calculus or Business Calculus). (4 units)
  • MATH 116 (This requirement may also be satisfied by Elementary Statistics or Business Statistics). (4 units)
  • BUS 200 This course also meets CSUMB's tech/info requirement. (4 units). If the tech/info requirement has already been met by other means, BUS 299 (2 units) may be required to establish the necessary spreadsheet competency.

Additional lower division courses are required for the Agribusiness Management Concentration: Soil Science and Plant Science. These courses can be taken at Hartnell Community College. As of Fall 2009, Soil Science and Plant Science at Hartnell, in combination, will meet California State General Ed requirements B1, B2 and B3. Together they will satisfy CSUMB's Sci Method and Sci Content requirements.

Upper Division Core - 34 Units
Upper Division BUS Electives - 16 Units

Students are required to complete 16 units of Upper Division BUS elective courses. They may choose four 4-unit courses, freely, from our selection of upper division BUS electives, OR they may choose to earn a concentration by taking a specific set of elective courses.

Concentrations

Accounting: BUS 383, BUS 384, BUS 385, BUS 482, BUS 484
This concentration requires five courses (20 elective units) to complete.

Agribusiness Management: BUS 435, BUS 498, plus any two of the following: BUS 322,BUS 330, BUS 421, BUS 425, BUS 434, BUS 454.

Entrepreneurship: BUS 322, BUS 451, plus any two of the following: CST 351, BUS 356, BUS 421, BUS 460, BUS 469, BUS 498

Hospitality Management: BUS 313, BUS 323, BUS 330, BUS 471, BUS 498
BUS 312 replaces the CORE requirement of BUS 309 for this concentration. This concentration requires five courses (18 elective units) to complete.

Hotel/Resort Management: BUS 313, BUS 323, BUS 330, BUS 471, BUS 498
BUS 312 replaces the CORE requirement of BUS 309 for this concentration. This concentration requires five courses (18 elective units) to complete. The focus chosen for BUS 313 and BUS 498 distinguishes this concentration from Hospitality Management.

Info-tech/E-commerce: BUS 460, BUS 469, plus any two of the following: BUS 322, BUS 421, BUS 425, BUS 451, BUS 498

Management & Int'l Business: BUS 330, BUS 331, BUS 493, BUS 425

Marketing: BUS 421, BUS 322, plus any two of the following: BUS 323, BUS 356, BUS 425, BUS 460, BUS 469, BUS 471, BUS 498

Major Learning Outcomes

Each of our six Major Learning Outcomes is met by one of our required Upper Division Core courses. The Major Learning Outcomes are then further emphasized by the BUS elective course selection.

MLO 1 Leadership and management skills including ability to ~ contribute to organizational effectiveness ~ manage innovation and change ~ exercise leadership effectively and ethically ~ inspire, motivate and empower others ~ use time and other personal assets productively.

This outcome is initially met by BUS 305. Business electives that further deepen this outcome include: BUS 312, BUS 313, BUS 330, BUS 331, BUS 434, BUS 471, BUS 493 and BUS 499.

MLO 2 Marketing skills including ability to ~ analyze markets, environments and their associated trends and competition ~ develop and use marketing information systems (customer/consumer research via traditional and Internet methods) ~ produce a marketing plan from a holistic perspective, i.e., a socially responsible view of all the organization's stakeholders.

This outcome is initially met by BUS 306. Business electives that further deepen this outcome include: BUS 313, BUS 322, BUS 323, BUS 421, BUS 425, BUS 435, BUS 460, BUS 469, BUS 471 and BUS 499.

MLO 3 Finance skills including ability to ~ prepare and analyze financial statements and projections ~ analyze a proposed project or investment ~ identify and evaluate sources of financing ~ understand accounting and financial reporting from an ethical and strategic perspective.

This outcome is initially met by BUS 307. Business electives that further deepen this outcome include: BUS 356, BUS 383, BUS 384, BUS 385, BUS 451, BUS 482, BUS 484 and BUS 499.

MLO 4 Information technology skills including ability to ~ identify and analyze an organization's information needs ~ design and implement database systems to meet needs ~ use information technology to support effective and ethical decision making ~ recognize and use technology trends to start or expand entrepreneurial or intrapreneurial ventures ~ use the Internet to disseminate information.

This outcome is initially met by BUS 308. Business electives that further deepen this outcome include: BUS 460, BUS 469 and BUS 499.

MLO 5 Operations management skills including ability to ~ improve operational productivity of an enterprise ~ improve strategic decisions ~ consistently deliver quality products and services which satisfy customer needs.

This outcome is initially met by BUS 309 or BUS 312. Business electives that further deepen this outcome include: BUS 313, BUS 330, BUS 435, BUS 471 and BUS 499.

MLO 6 Entrepreneurship/intrapreneurship skills and attitudes including ability to ~ recognize and evaluate opportunities ~ envision and launch new initiatives ~ assess and continuously improve performance ~ understand strategic and stakeholder management. This outcome is initially met by BUS 310. Business electives that further deepen this outcome include: BUS 322, BUS 451, BUS 493 and BUS 499.
