Music B.A. ~ Degree Requirements

Outcomes, Courses, and Assessment

Students will complete Core courses, Major Learning Outcomes and courses specific to their chosen concentration in order to succesfully complete their degree in Music.

Core Requirements

Keyboard I and II (MPA 110 and MPA 210)
Musicianship & Theory 101-102 (MPA 101 and MPA 102)
Masters Class (each semester, MPA 440)
Major Proseminar (MPA 300)
Senior Capstone (MPA 475)

Assessments for Keyboard and Musicianship and Theory are available. Students can inquire about assessments with the MPA Program Coordinator.

Major Learning Outcomes

MPA MLO 1 Historical and Theoretical Analysis ~ Students identify genres from different periods and integrate historical and theoretical perspectives in analyzing contemporary styles.

• Complete MPA 335
• Complete both MPA 337 and MPA 338

Concentration in Contemporary Music must also complete

• Complete the following: MPA 365 (formerly MPA 360);

Concentration in Jazz Studies must also complete

• Complete the following: MPA 336 or MPA 365 (formerly MPA 360)

Concentration in Vocal Music Studies must also complete

• Complete the following:  MPA 339

MPA MLO 2 Community Issues Analysis ~ Students understand and analyze societal issues associated with the production, dissemination, and consumption of music.

• Complete MPA 317S

MPA MLO 3 Comparative Analysis ~ Students understand compositional processes, aesthetic properties of style, and the ways these shape and are shaped by artistic and cultural forces.

• Complete two of the following: MPA 334; MPA 341; MPA 370; MPA 371; MPA 400; MPA 401

MPA MLO 4 Moral and Ethical Analysis ~ Students understand and address moral and ethical issues.

• Complete HCOM 403 or CHHS 350

MPA MLO 5 Performance Skills ~ Students express themselves artistically in at least one major performance area at a level appropriate for the particular music emphasis.

• Complete one of the following core courses for at least two consecutive semesters: MPA 315; MPA 415; MPA 410 AND
• Complete at least two courses from the following: MPA 309; MPA 310; MPA 320; MPA 330; MPA 332; MPA 340; MPA 345; MPA 350; MPA 405; MPA 406; MPA 420

MPA MLO 6 Technological Skills ~ Students understand how technology serves music and use the technological tools applicable to a specific area of concentration.

• Complete MPA 306

Concentration Requirements

Students will also complete the following courses dependent upon the concentration chosen. Students must select one of the following concentrations in order to complete their degree.

Jazz Studies

Contemporary Studies
Currently no additional courses to take outside of MLO's and general core requirements.

Recording Technology
CST 201 Media Tools (co-requisite lab must be taken as well)
MPA 307 Fundamentals of Digital Audio
MPA 308 Audio Production
MPA 408 Advanced Audio Production

Voice Studies
Currently no additional courses to take outside of MLO's and general core requirements.
