The Liberal Studies degree provides diverse opportunities for you to understand and work in a multicultural society that acknowledges differences in access to opportunity and language diversity. We focus on preparing you both broadly and in a chosen specialty area, with both online and in-classroom experiences, so that you are able to participate professionally in a technological society. The Liberal Studies degree is the pathway for entering the teaching profession (K-8), and the majority of our students choose to be teachers. However, some have gone into other career paths such as social work, counseling, and law. You are also able to obtain a Human Development Minor. The department boasts a closeknit group of professors from wide-ranging backgrounds and specialty areas who do applied work in the local community and bring that depth of experience into their classes. We are particularly sensitive to the needs of students, and provide our own Advising Center where they are most welcome!

As I finish my third week of the master’s program at UCSC, I thought I should tell you how well prepared I have been for the coursework here. As many of my classmates are struggling with issues regarding culture, equity, and diversity, I find myself continually contributing information that I received from classes at CSUMB… I am well on my way to being the teacher that I have always wanted to be, and feel that I owe a tremendous amount of thanks to you and the other Liberal Studies faculty for the preparation I received while attending CSUMB. Please continue to challenge students as you challenged me…
