Ilene Feinman, Ph.D., Dean

Dean Ilene Feinman came to CSUMB as a lecturer in 1996. At that time she was completing her PhD. in the History of Consciousness Program at University of California, Santa Cruz. Dr. Feinman has been a member of the faculty at CSUMB from its second year and was part of the team that built the Human Communication major, the University Learning Requirements system and in particular the Democratic Participation ULR. She previously served as the chair of the University Learning Requirements Operation and Policy Committee, the chair of the Division of Humanities and Communication, and the chair of the Academic Senate. Dr. Feinman received the President’s Medal for Faculty in 2011.

Dr. Feinman’s research and publication is in the area of feminist activism in social movements, and women’s inclusion in the US and other militaries. Her book, Citizenship Rites: Feminist Soldiers and Feminist Antimilitarists (NYU Press, 2000) was noted in the Chronicle of Higher Education as a groundbreaking work on women, the US military, and militarism in the context of international relations. She has also published in collections on peace activism, gender and war, as well as having been interviewed by NPR, the Washington Post, and Air America on the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal.
