If you have previous education in a language and plan on continuing to study that language at CSUMB, the School of World Languages and Cultures encourages you to enroll in an appropriate level of study based on your experience. Here is some information to help you find the appropriate level:

High school: 1 year of high school is typically counted as the equivalent of 1 semester of study at CSUMB.

Junior Transfer Students can look to Assist.org to find the relationship and articulation agreement between your school and CSUMB:  http://www.assist.org/web-assist/CSUMB.html

Online Spanish Placement: The Spanish Language Program has also implemented an online placement exam to assist in accurate placement. The test takes about 20-30 minutes to complete and will then post your score to your email address.

You can access the test at http://webcape.byuhtrsc.org/?acct=csumb and the password is otters1 (that's the word 'otter' followed by a number one). While there is nothing stopping you from taking the test multiple times, the goal is to be placed in a skill-appropriate course. You will not get extra credits from being placed in a higher level.

Faculty Assistance: WLC Faculty members can assist you with correct placement. Please contact us as follows:
American Sign Language (ASL): Regina Daniels
Japanese: Yoshiko_Saito-Abbott@csumb.edu
Spanish: Donaldo_Urioste@csumb.edu  He will ask you what score you received on the WebCAPE placement exam, so be sure to complete the exam before you email.
(NOTE: Most faculty are not regularly available during the summer. Be sure to allow enough time before registration if you have questions about placement.)
