To be well prepared for entry into the Environmental Studies B.A. degree program and to graduate in four years (for new freshman) or two years (for transfer students), the following coursework should be taken prior to entering CSUMB:
High School Preparation
- Pre-calculus
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Environmental or Earth Science
- 2 years of foreign language (Spanish recommended)
Recommended Preparation for Community College Transfer Students
- Area A: Written and Oral Communication, Critical Thinking (9 units)
- Area B: Natural Science and Mathematics -
Mathematics (B4): Pre-calculus and Statistics (8 units)
Physical Sciences (B1):Introductory Chemistry (4 units), Physical Geography or Geology (4 units)
Biology (B2 and B3): At least 4 units: Environmental Science with Lab, General Biology, or other college biology ) - Area C: Humanities and fine arts (2 different disciplines; Students should take 2 semesters of foreign language for area C2 in order to work towards CSUMB's foreign language requirement) (9 units)
- Area D: Social Sciences (3 different disciplines), including Economics, U.S. History, Constitution and American Ideals, and California state and local government, (CSU's US-1, US-2, and US-3 requirements) (9 units)
- Area E: 1 course in personal development theory (3 units)
CSUMB Lower-Division
If you enter CSUMB as a freshman and are considering the Environmental Studies major, we recommend that you begin taking MATH and some science courses during your first year. You may declare Environmental Studies as your major at any time in your college career. Be sure to contact an Environmental Studies advisor as soon as you declare this major.
