Outcomes, Courses, and Assessment

The International Health Policy minor is a cross-disciplinary program between the Department of Health, Human Services & Public Policy and the Division of Social, Behavioral & Global Studies. To complete the minor, you must fulfill Learning Outcomes from both departments, listed below, by successfully completing courses or alternative assessment options.

You may add the IHP minor to your course of study at any time during your undergraduate studies at CSUMB. However, we recommend contacting one of the program faculty members as early as possible, so that you can integrate the minor requirements into your Individual Learning Plan (ILP). Collaborative Health and Human Services LOs

Cross-Cultural Competency - CCC ~ Demonstrate an understanding of the differences between self and others and be comfortable engaging in a process of relationship-building characterized by mutual respect and sensitivity; assess the needs and capabilities of culturally diverse populations, and communicate effectively across cultural groups

Knowledge of Health and Human Services - KHHS ~ Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental principles and issues common to the major fields of health and human services including community health, social welfare and public policy, and demonstrate competence in the selected areas of concentration

Public Policy Analysis - PPA ~ Demonstrate the ability to critically analyze public policy issues and begin to master the skills necessary to identify and define public problems, analyze existing policies, develop alternatives to current policy and recommend alternatives

 Global Studies LOs

Understanding of Global Issues and the Third World ~ Students will be able to comprehend, analyze and evaluate important global issues that have a particularly adverse affect on the 'poorer,' so-called Third World countries. They will also be able to comprehend, analyze and evaluate the role played in the Third World or 'South' by the more powerful states and corporations of the First World 'North.'

  • If you are a CHHS major, complete the following: GS 320: Global Issues & 3rd World

World Views ~ Students will be able to comprehend, analyze, compare, evaluate and develop respect for the wide array of different philosophical, religious, ethical, political, economic and social views held by people around the world. They will also be able to comprehend the adverse effects of ethnocentrism upon intercultural communications and relations. They will be able to comprehend and reflect critically upon their own world view and be able to empathize with people who hold world views that are different from their own.

Global Political Economy ~ Students will be able to comprehend, analyze and evaluate the major structures, processes and effects of the evolving global economy. They should also be able to comprehend, analyze and evaluate the interrelationships between global political and economic conditions. The program pays particular attention to the gendered nature and informal aspects of the global political economy.

Courses and Other Pathway Requirements

The IHP minor curriculum includes a 60-hour field placement and courses in Collaborative Health & Human Services (CHHS) and Global Studies (GS).

Field Practice Requirement

You will complete approximately 60 hours of fieldwork during the IHP minor. CHHS and GS advisors will approve agencies based on:

  1. The opportunities they present for you to work on environmental health policy issues of importance.
  2. Their ability to meet the minimum requirements for providing mentorship and organizational support.

Stipends and travel expenses, especially outside the U.S., are encouraged. The CHHS Field Practice Program policies and documentation may be used, as appropriate, for assisting students and field mentors in organizing and assessing students learning opportunities and accomplishments in the field. Depending on your CSUMB major, you must follow a specific pathway to complete IHP minor course requirements. You may achieve each of the Learning Outcomes in your pathway by successfully completing the listed courses, or by passing alternative assessment options determined with your advisor:
