Outcomes, Courses, and Assessment

You may add the Environmental Health Policy Minor to your course of study at any time during your undergraduate studies at CSUMB. However, if you think you are interested in the EHP Minor, you should contact one of the program faculty as early as possible, so that you can integrate the Minor requirements into your Individual Learning Plan (ILP).

The following CHHS and ESSP MLOs represent the knowledge, skills and abilities you are expected to master to successfully complete the minor degree and demonstrate your competence. You must achieve each of the Learning Outcomes designated below by successfully completing the listed courses or alternative assessment options.

ESSP Majors

LO 1 Knowledge of Health and Human Services ~ Demonstrate understanding of the fundamental principles and issues common to the major fields of health and human services including community health, social welfare, and public policy; and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities pertinent to the health and/or human service concentration area(s) selected

  • Complete all three of the following courses: CHHS 320 Introduction to Community Health ; CHHS 320S Introduction to Community Health: Field Practicum ; and CHHS 420 Multicultural Health Education & Promotion 

LO 2 Public Policy Analysis ~ Demonstrate ability to critically analyze public policy issues and begin to master the skills necessary to identify and define public policy problems, analyze existing policies, develop alternatives to current policy, and recommend alternatives

  • Complete the following course: CHHS 450 Health & Social Policy Analysis 
CHHS Majors

LO 1 Applied Economics And Policy Competency ~ Ability to examine the linkages between economics and environmental goods and services to analyze problems of resource allocation, and to apply the basic principles of environmental ethics to the analysis of environmental issues ~ Ability to critically evaluate alternative policies in terms of the economic, political, ethical, historical, or cultural factors that influence environmental decision making

  • Complete two of the following: ESSP 384S Environmental Justice & Environmental Policy ; ESSP 383 Environmental Ethics & Environmental Policy ; ESSP 385 Social and Environmental History of California ; and ESSP 386 Science, Political Process, and Environment 

LO 2 Systems Approach to Applied Problem Solving ~ Ability to use a systems perspective to analyze environmental issues and evaluate the potential effects and ethical implications of alternative environmental policies or human actions

  • Complete one of the following: ESSP 309 Science and Policy of Global Change  or ESSP 387 Water Resources Assessment, Law, & Policy
Courses and Other Pathway Requirements

Requirements for this minor provide students with significant breadth and appropriate depth of knowledge and skills in environmental politics and economics, environmental health issues, public health assessment and education, and policy analysis. The curriculum includes a field placement and CHHS and ESSP course work.

Field Practice Requirement

You will complete approximately 120 hours of fieldwork during the EHP Minor. Your CHHS or ESSP faculty advisor will approve the agencies involved based on 

  1. The opportunities they present for you to work on environmental health policy issues of importance
  2. The agency's ability to meet the minimum requirements for providing mentorship and organizational support

Stipends and travel expenses, especially outside the Tri-County area, are encouraged.
