World Languages and Cultures, B.A. ~ Learning Environment
The WLC learning environment is interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, and interactive.
Much of your learning will take place in small interactive classes conducted by a cross-cultural faculty, in the World Languages and Cultures buildings including ultramodern language-learning labs where leading-edge technology allows fast Internet connections around the globe.
Because our region takes great pride in the multilingual and multicultural heritages that include major Chinese, Filipino, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mexican, Native American,Portuguese, Spanish, and Vietnamese influences, and because we have built CSUMB with an eye toward plurality, you will benefit from regular interaction with heritage speakers of the languages that you study.
Commonly referred to as "the language capital of the world," the surrounding Monterey Bay region supports a multilingual ambience reflective of its deep historical, multilingual and multicultural heritage. Local Institutions such as CSUMB, the Defense Language Institute, the Monterey Institute of International Studies, Language Line Services, Monterey Peninsula College, CTB/McGraw-Hill, and the Naval Postgraduate School deliver 25 percent of our nation's post-secondary learning in languages other than English. Though separate entities, they are closely interconnected through various programs, creating a one-of-a-kind language web.
