Making Contact at CSUMB

Throughout this catalog you will find contact information listed for specific campus entities. Typically this includes building number, mailing address, information phone number, fax number, email address, and website.

Mailing Address

All mail should be addressed to an individual or office followed by the general campus address:

100 Campus Center
Seaside, CA 93955-8001

When known, the building number for the individual or office should be inserted between the name and general address. If no building number has been indicated, the CSUMB mailroom will route the mail according to the office or individual name.

Email Addresses

As a general rule, if you know the first and last names of an individual member of the campus community, you can determine the person’s email address. If using FirstClass on campus, start by typing the person’s first or last name then hitting enter. The person’s complete email address will either automatically be entered or a list of possible names will pop up so that a choice can be made.

When addressing email from off campus, you need to enter a complete email address. Toward this end, it is helpful to know that most CSUMB email addresses for individuals are created by linking the first and last name with an underscore followed by @csumb.edu (e.g. ozzie_otter@csumb.edu). Office email addresses are more difficult to determine. Some follow the same approach as for individuals. Others use acronyms followed by @csumb.edu.

Specific email addresses are listed on the CSUMB.EDU/az directory webpages.

Building Numbers

CSUMB buildings are typically identified by number. A few buildings have become more commonly recognized by name, but they also have assigned numbers. Campus maps, including the one in the Directories/Resources section of the CSUMB Catalog, clearly reference these building numbers.

Telephone Numbers

In 1998, the area code for CSUMB changed to 831 (from 408). The telephone exchange prefix is 582. Each phone on campus may be reached by dialing its four-digit extension number from another phone on campus. Each phone may also be directly dialed from within the 831 area code by dialing the 582 prefix followed by the extension. Those calling from outside of the area may directly dial a number by combining the area code, prefix, and extension (831-582-####).

Websites

As the university’s web domain, CSUMB.EDU comprises hundreds of thousands of pages of information. The university centrally manages only a small portion of this overall web presence as official university information. Generally, the official pages are closely linked to the CSUMB.EDU homepage, and can be detected by a common look and feel with the homepage and the first-tier pages linked directly from the homepage. The university makes every effort to ensure that these official pages contain accurate and current information. Any concerns should be directed to the office maintaining a page by using the contact link in the page footer.

Individual programs and departments also offer their official information on microsites within the CSUMB.EDU domain. Official microsites have URLs that start with a virtual domain name for the entity followed by csumb.edu (e.g. http://it.csumb.edu). The individual programs and departments take responsibility for ensuring that these official microsite pages contain accurate and current information, and any concerns should be directed to them using their contact link, usually in the page footer.

Extensive unofficial pages maintained by students, staff, and faculty may also be found in the CSUMB.EDU domain. Most of these reside on the Home Drive that provides every member of the campus community with allocated server space. URLs for these unofficial pages generally start with home as the virtual domain (e.g. http://home.csumb.edu/o/otterelvis/world/myhomepage). CSUMB provides server space for these unofficial pages as part of its educational service. The university communicates acceptable use policies, but does not monitor actual use of the server space by faculty, staff, and students. Nor does it make any attempt to ensure that information on unofficial pages is accurate or current. Any concerns should be directed to the page publisher.

Two additional web domains contain CSUMB-related information. The Foundation of California State University, Monterey Bay, a nonprofit affiliate of the university, owns and maintains the CSUMB.ORG website. The CSUMB Alumni Association owns and maintains CSUMBalumni.org website. Any concerns with these domains should be addressed to their webmasters via the contact mechanisms provided on the sites.

Further details may be found on the CSUMB.EDU/webpat and CSUMB.EDU/it websites.
