Interdisciplinary Master of Arts with Instructional Science and Technology Emphasis ~ Preparation

The Interdisciplinary Master of Arts with Instructional Science and Technology Emphasis (IST) seeks students who represent diverse perspectives, backgrounds, life experiences and interests and are dynamic and highly motivated to improve quality of life for individuals and the effectiveness of organizations through the application of instructional science and technology. Students from a variety of academic backgrounds are eligible for admission. Basic computer and internet skills and knowledge must be demonstrated before entrance to the degree program.

The Admissions Committee looks for strong evidence of a commitment to the CSUMB Vision and to the application of the principles of instructional science and technology. Professional experience will be considered in addition to transcripts and test scores. Although professional experience is not required it is encouraged, because such experience adds tremendous value to the learning environment and helps develop a context for integrating key program content and ideas.

The Admissions Committee holistically considers the following information in evaluating your application:

  • Portfolio: Documented evidence to inform the committee of your intended interests and abilities in this area
  • Evidence that demonstrates potential for graduate studies including:
    • Academic performance as an undergraduate student (Completed bachelor's degree with a 3.0 GPA is usually considered minimum for admission; students with a completed bachelor's degree, a GPA from 2.75 to 2.99, and exceptional work history or potential for success are sometimes considered.)
    • GRE (recommended)
    • TOEFL or other evidence of language proficiency (when required)
    • Post-baccalaureate courses
    • Statement of purpose that details the applicant's objectives and qualifications
    • Two letters of recommendation

In unusual circumstances, the graduate admissions committee may make exceptions to these criteria.
