Prerequisites

None, but we recommend that you take HCOM 245: Introduction to Chicana/o Studies if it can be used to meet your lower-division requirements.

Outcomes, Courses, and Assessment
Outcomes

The Chicana/Chicano Studies Minor prepares you to achieve the following five outcomes:

LO 1 Theoretical Inquiry and Analysis ~ Students will be able to analyze major theories, paradigms, and methods used to study Chicana/o and Latina/o communities and apply them in a research project.

LO 2 Cultural Interpretation ~ Students will be able to critically examine and interpret cultural expressions of Chicana/o and Latina/o communities within a critical context.

LO 3 Historical and Political Formations ~ Students will be able to evaluate the historical experiences of the Chicana/o and Latina/o people within the structures of the United States.

LO 4 Identity and Contemporary Social Formations ~ Students will be able to critically analyze how Chicana/o and Latina/o identities and cultural practices are socially constructed from within specific contexts and lived experiences.

LO 5 Community Leadership and Practice ~ Students will be able to apply their knowledge of Chicana/o and Latina/o experiences toward advancing the cause of social justice.

COURSES
The Chicana/Chicano Studies Minor requires you to take an additional 20 academic units—one four-unit course per each of the above outcomes.  The general pathway for students pursuing the Chicana/Chicano Studies Minor is described below:

LO 1 Theoretical Inquiry and Analysis

  • Complete one of the following:HCOM 345 Chicana/o-Latina/o Life and Culture; HCOM 455 Paradigms of the Chicana/o Community

LO 2 Cultural Interpretation

  • Complete one of the following: VPA 319 Chicana/o Art History: Image, Ideology and Iconography; VPA 347 Chicano-African American Art; SPAN 365 The Chicano Novel; SBS 325 Art of the Aztec Empire; HCOM 428 Contemporary Chicana Poetry

LO 3 Historical and Political Formations

  • Complete one of the following: SPAN 308 History and Culture of Aztlán: The Southwestern United States; SBS 320S Hispanic California: 1542 to 1848; HCOM 365 Chicana/o Latina/o History

LO 4 Identity and Contemporary Social Formations

  • Complete one of the following: SPAN 328 Latina Life Stories in Comparative Context; HCOM 328 Latina Life Stories; HCOM 344 Chicana/Latina Feminisms; HCOM 446 Ethnographic Portraits in Cultural Citizenship

LO 5 Community Leadership and Practice

  • Complete one of the following: SBS 384S & 384L Cultural Contexts of Bilingual Education; SPAN 370 The Chicano Community
