Creative and Artistic Expression ULR : Assessment

Course-Based Assessment

In each course satisfying the Creative and Artistic Expression ULR, evidence is assessed to determine if you have satisfied the outcomes.

Alternative Assessment

You can also meet the requirements for this ULR through assessment of prior learning or life experience. To complete alternative assessment, you must submit a portfolio demonstrating achievement of the learning outcomes.

While one's independent pursuits may not fit neatly into the outcomes, your work needs to address the outcomes. we encourage you to reexamine your work and reflect upon whether it demonstrates achievement of the outcomes. The creative process is broad and variable and the outcomes are meant to operate as organizational guides within which your creative endeavors can be examined.

The work you submit should be in one of the following forms:

  • Written, (poetry, fiction, nonfiction, etc.)
  • Visual, (sculpture, painting, photography, filmmaking, etc.)
  • Music/sound (instrumental, voice, digital)
  • Performance
  • Digital (web-based, design, multimedia)
  • Film/video/animation
  • Hybrid forms (creative forms that are a combination of any of these or that do not fit neatly into any of the categories mentioned; these are subject to review by the Creative and Artistic Expression Learning Community)

NOTE: Alternative assessment assumes that you have already attained mastery of the outcomes. It is not an independent study. Students may not use CSUMB courses or coursework from CSUMB courses that do not meet the Creative and Artistic Expression ULR in assessment.

Independent Assessment Process

FIRST: Obtain prior approval

You must have prior approval in order to pursue independent assessment by registering for ASMT 421. If you think that your work will meet the outcomes, contact the chair:

SECOND: Produce a proposal to do an independent assessment.

  1. Produce a 1-2 page written proposal that describes your work and analyzes how it meets the outcomes. Please be thorough in describing your work and include plans for your portfolio review.
  2. Submit your proposal to the ULR Chair.

THIRD: Register for ASMT 421.

FOURTH: Produce a portfolio of your work.

This can take a variety of forms. If you have questions regarding your portfolio preparation, please contact the chair for more information. The chair may direct you to another faculty member more suited to your portfolio.

Guiding questions:

  1. How do the materials in your portfolio reflect the criteria of assessment for the Creative and Artistic Expression ULR?
  2. How do the materials in your portfolio identify the nature and link to the interests and needs of the diverse audience for whom the materials are to presented/exhibited?
  3. How have you demonstrated both competency and craft in your chosen medium?
  4. How do the forms of communication you have chosen reflect consideration of the audience(s) you have chosen to engage?
  5. What elements of your portfolio indicate that your work has allowed you to reflect upon the process of creative and artistic expression and the contexts for which and through which it is created?

FIFTH: Arrange a time to present your portfolio to the committee.

This can be arranged through the ULR chair. The assessment process is not only a process of evaluation but also one of learning.

After review of your portfolio/presentation, the ULR chair and committee members will contact you with a decision within a few weeks.
