Within the CSU, all students are required to demonstrate upper-division level competency in written communication. The CSU's Graduation Writing Assessement Requirement [GWAR], an upper-division writing proficiency requirement, reflects this commitment.  More generally, the CSU has identified development of responsible and effective communication as a fundamental feature of a Baccalaureate Education.

Through Spring 2004, the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) could be met through either a course or an exam. Starting in Fall 2004, CSUMB adopted a course-based approach exclusively. GWAR can be met through Learning Outcomes in CSUMB's Engcom C courses.

Courses currently approved to fulfill GWAR are listed below.  Courses no longer satisfying GWAR can be viewed in Archived Courses in the left-side navigation column.  The listing of a course as approved does not indicate that it will be offered in any given semester. Check current offerings on the CSUMB.EDU/schedule website or check course descriptions to see how frequently a course is offered.
