You must prepare a plan in conference with an MPA advisor prior to beginning the program.

You must achieve each of the Learning Outcomes designated below by successfully completing the listed courses or alternative assessment options.

LO 1 Historical and Theoretical Analysis ~ students identify music genres from different periods and integrate historical and theoretical perspectives in analyzing contemporary styles

  • Complete one of the following: 
    MPA 101 Musicianship and Theory I
    MPA 102 Musicianship and Theory II
  • Complete MPA 335 Reflections on American Music;
  • Complete one of the following:
    MPA 337 Music History I (online) 500-1750;
    MPA 338 Music History II  (online)1750-1900

LO 2 Comparative Analysis ~ students analyze music in a social, historical, and cultural context, and compare and contrast music of at least three different cultural traditions, including non-Eurocentric traditions

  • Complete MPA 360 Survey of World Music -Online

LO 3 Performance/Production Skills ~ students express themselves with an intermediate to advanced level of instrumental, technological, and/or vocal competency

  • Complete one of the following:
    MPA 306 Music and Computers
    MPA 307 Fundamentals of Digital Audio
    MPA 308 Audio Production
  • Complete one of the following:
    MPA 310 Gospel Choir
    MPA 320 Chorale
    MPA 330 Voice Training I
    MPA 332 Voice Training II
    MPA 340 Music Production and Artistic Development
    (taken in two sequential semesters); or MPA 350 Performing Band (taken in four sequential semesters)
    MPA 420 Advanced Voice Ensemble (taken in four sequential semesters)
